Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2026 keynote wrapped up Monday with a strong focus on AI and sendoff for outgoing CEO Tim Cook — but investors didn’t seem impressed by Apple’s AI glow-up. Software engineering chief Craig Federighi introduced Apple’s new operating system, Golden Gate, featuring numerous AI updates. The company also debuted Siri AI, an “entirely new version” of the assistant, and Federighi highlighted the much-anticipated Apple Intelligence revamp’s focus on privacy. The new offerings also prioritize child safety, with Apple adding content and access controls to kids’ accounts.
Google DeepMind has introduced the new Gemma 4 12B, which runs on a standard laptop.
Google DeepMind has released a new multimodal artificial intelligence model, Gemma 4 12B. The system operates locally and offers users video, audio, and text processing without an internet connection.
The model runs on standard personal computers with just 16 GB of RAM. In terms of performance, it nearly matches the twice-as-large 26B version.
The new version is capable of writing code and speech recognition. In a demonstration test, it simultaneously analyzed 313 frames from a five-minute video (at a rate of one frame per second) along with the audio.
Matthias Bastian, a reporter for the tech portal The Decoder, notes that this is the first mid-sized Gemma version featuring direct audio processing capabilities.
The new tool is already available on the Hugging Face, Ollama, and LM Studio platforms under the Apache 2.0 license, making it easier to use commercially.
Washington eyes an ownership slice of OpenAI
The Rundown: The White House and OpenAI are reportedly in talks over the U.S. government taking an equity stake in the company, with the shares potentially going towards a “Public Wealth Fund” built to hand Americans a cut of the AI boom.
The details:
Axios reported that industry backers have discussed a 1-5% stake, far below U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders’ proposed one-time 50% stock tax on AI labs.
CEO Sam Altman met with both Sanders and Trump officials last week to discuss the idea, which was also detailed in OpenAI’s April policy paper.
U.S. President Donald Trump said, “It almost becomes a partnership with the American public… and that would be a beautiful thing... It would make ‘em rich.”
Former U.S. AI czar David Sacks came out against the move, calling it a way to “accelerate the corporate-government fusion we’re already sliding toward.”
Why it matters: Spreading the wealth sounds good in theory, especially as public opinion on AI keeps sinking. But a government that owns a piece of OAI, profits from it, and regulates it feels ripe for the typical conflicts of interest. Until the checks actually land in the average American’s hands, we’ll believe it when we see it.
OpenAI’s ‘superapp’ revamp is coming soon

The Rundown: OpenAI is reportedly planning its biggest ChatGPT revamp yet “in the coming weeks”, which will rebuild ChatGPT into an agent-and-coding “superapp” that prioritizes pushing its nearly 1B users toward paid products ahead of its upcoming IPO.
The details:
The reorganization will place greater focus on its agentic coding platform, Codex, with a senior OAI member telling the Financial Times that “Chat is dead”.
The move will combine coding, images, and third-party apps into one interface, believing model advances will now understand user intent across functions.
The company also recently ran a new TV ad spot with the tagline “It’s time to fly”, pushing Codex and AI agents over simple ChatGPT-type interfaces.
Codex has seen a 6x increase in users to over 5M since February, with OAI pushing to increase the number of paying business users as its IPO nears.
Why it matters: Claude Code was Anthropic’s breakout product, which was then simplified for its broader audience (albeit a bit awkwardly) with Cowork. OAI has now seen similar success and upgrades for Codex, and the “side quest” retreat is on full display via a superapp path that gets more paid users into its agentic coding product.
OpenAI plans largest ChatGPT revamp since launch LINK
OpenAI is preparing the biggest overhaul of ChatGPT since it first launched, turning the chatbot into a “superapp” that will roll out on the website and mobile application over the coming weeks, per the Financial Times.
The redesigned app will lean heavily on the Codex AI assistant and push users toward autonomous AI agents, coding, image generation, and third-party applications, reflecting the company’s view that chatbots are not the future.
Thibault Sottiaux, who runs OpenAI’s core product and platform teams, said the superapp will give each user a personal agent reachable through mobile, desktop, web, or by talking to it in the car.

Vision Pro creator Mike Rockwell volunteered to fix Siri and replaced its leadership with his visionOS team, while Craig Federighi blocked him from reporting directly to Cook and kept AI under software engineering.
Rockwell, Federighi and Eddy Cue then struck a deal to power Siri with Google’s Gemini models and Google Cloud, and former AI chief John Giannandrea was stripped of duties and replaced by ex-Google executive Amar Subramanya.
China Has Approved the World’s First Invasive Neurotechnological Chip
In China, the world’s first invasive neurotechnological chip, NEO, has been approved, and its use is permitted even outside clinical trials. The device is intended for patients aged 18 to 60.
Dong Hui, 39, who is paralyzed from the neck down, was able to write his own name again after 11 months of training. He noted that on the ninth day of training, he was able to pick up a ball without a glove.
Avinash Singh, a researcher at the University of Technology Sydney, explained that the rapid approval of NEO is due to its less-invasive design, as its sensors do not penetrate the cerebral cortex.
The device has already been included in the country’s insurance system. China supports the development of the BCI field within its national five-year plan, while the approval of the next project, Beinao-1, is planned for 2028.

Apple has renamed Siri and introduced completely new capabilities in the form of Siri AI
At the WWDC conference held on Monday, Apple updated its voice assistant and named it Siri AI. The presentation was Tim Cook’s final appearance as CEO, a position he will hand over to John Ternus on September 1st.
Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President, explained that the assistant is now capable of maintaining multi-step dialogues and working with personal data within applications. For security, information is processed either on-device or in Private Cloud Compute.
The assistant has been integrated into Dynamic Island, Spotlight, and the iPhone camera, which can now recognize objects. According to Goldman Sachs, in addition to Google Gemini, the company also plans to integrate Anthropic’s Claude model in the future.
The new system will become available in September, alongside the release of iOS 27 and iPhone 18. According to CNBC, shares were trading near their maximums, though traders expect stock prices to fluctuate within a 3% range by the end of the week.

Instagram AI chatbot breach hits 20,000 accounts LINK
Meta has confirmed that hackers compromised at least 20,225 Instagram accounts by exploiting a flaw in its AI-powered support chatbot, marking the first time the company has put a number on the scope of the breach.
The “High Touch Support” account recovery tool sent password reset links to any email address without checking whether it actually belonged to the Instagram account, a bug that attackers exploited from April 17 to May 31, 2026.
Potentially exposed data includes contact info, birth dates, posts, direct messages, and profile information; Meta disabled the chatbot, invalidated reset links, and placed affected users into a mandatory security checkpoint to reset passwords.
Companies rehire workers laid off for AI LINK
Companies that cut staff in favor of AI are now rehiring people for those same jobs, a pattern Robert Half consultants are calling the “AI boomerang” effect after surveying 2,000 U.S. hiring managers across industries.
Nearly a third of hiring managers, 32%, said their organizations eliminated a role or let someone go because of productivity gains from AI or automation, only to later rehire for that exact same position.
Finance led the rehiring trend at 44%, followed by HR at 35% and tech at 32%, with managers citing gaps in quality, oversight, and decision-making once business demands picked up after the initial cuts.
Self-improving agents are AI’s next act
Thrive Holdings used AI to cut tax document prep time by a third while maintaining up to 97% accuracy. But the real story is what happened next: The system kept improving itself.
OpenAI forward-deployed engineers (FDE) worked with Thrive Holdings’ engineers to build Tax AI, an agent that helps automate the process of preparing 1040 and 1041 tax returns. Initially, Tax AI was built for simpler work, such as ingesting W-2s and 1099s, but as the tax season went on, it was able to self-improve and handle more complex tasks, Arthur Fernandes Araujo, an OpenAI FDE lead on the project, told The Deep View.
“If you think about AI as an ever more capable coworker that is augmenting you, you want a coworker that is capable of —given some input on what it did incorrectly — having the memory of it and not repeating the error,” Araujo said.
OpenAI quantified those improvements by measuring the percentage of tax returns with accurate field completion, meaning all boxes on the document were filled out correctly. At launch, only a quarter of tax returns had 75% or higher field completion. Within six weeks, 86% of returns hit that mark. Eventually, the system grew even faster, with 90% of returns hitting 100% correct field completion, OpenAI said in a release.
So how does it work? To get better, the system uses a three-part loop:
First, a practitioner reveals errors and steers what the product learns
Then the system tracks the full process beyond inputs and outputs to convert the corrections into evals
Finally, a Codex-driven improvement loop allows the system to build on the evals
For instance, in the blog post, OpenAI outlined a rental property income example in which their Tax AI system must extract Schedule E fields from messy source materials, such as handwritten notes, emails, and spreadsheets, then map them to a tax engine for practitioner review. When errors are found, practitioner corrections are captured as structured data, grouped into recurring failure patterns, and fed to Codex as scoped engineering tasks.
In this project, what’s “self‑improving” is the harness around the model, not the underlying model itself. The tax agent is built on OpenAI’s Codex harness, and it’s the harness that’s being iteratively improved based on practitioner feedback. Because the Codex harness is open source, other developers can also build similar self‑improving agents on top of it.
Also notable is that the same three-part design can be applicable for workflows in other domains and industries and is “quite generalizable,” John de Wasseige, one of the FDE leads on this project, told The Deep View. For example, OpenAI says it is working with Thrive Holdings to apply it to accounting workflows, such as booking, audit and operational workflows.

Millions of working Americans struggle to read at a functional level — and artificial intelligence may be helping hide it.
Why it matters: Low literacy is quietly becoming a major economic drag, even as AI tools allow workers to complete tasks they may not fully understand.
Experts warn that this can mask deeper skill gaps until workers are asked to make judgments, solve problems or evaluate AI-generated answers.
Some researchers call this “cognitive surrender” — when people defer to AI outputs without fully evaluating them.
That creates a workforce that looks productive on the surface but is vulnerable to disruption.
By the numbers: Roughly 130 million U.S. adults read below a sixth-grade level, according to adult literacy estimates.
About 43 million U.S. adults cannot read, write or do basic math above a third-grade level, according to ProLiteracy.
More than 90% of jobs require some form of computer literacy, Sharon Bonney, CEO of the Coalition on Adult Basic Education, told Axios.
Zoom in: Low literacy at work is showing up in emails, safety instructions, training materials, math-heavy trades, health benefits forms and computer-based tasks.
Bonney said adult education programs often see learners who want better jobs but lack the basic reading, math, English-language or digital skills needed to enter apprenticeships, community college or higher-paying work.
“If you can’t read, write, speak the language, can’t use a computer, your chances of being gainfully employed are pretty slim,” Bonney said.
What they’re saying: “The net effect of AI on the workplace is probably going to be increased demand and need for workers with higher levels of basic skills, not lower,” Stephen Reder, professor emeritus of applied linguistics at Portland State University, tells Axios.
“If it’s flashing a red warning light that says we have a literacy challenge, then we probably really do have a literacy challenge,” Amanda Bergson-Shilcock, senior fellow at the National Skills Coalition, told Axios.
Yes, but: Americans have not stopped buying books.
Independent bookstores have grown in recent years, and Barnes & Noble has staged a comeback, suggesting reading culture remains strong for some.
However, Reder said book buying and literacy skills are not the same thing. The bigger divide may be between people who use reading deeply in everyday life and those who rarely practice those skills.
“Not only are skill levels going down,” Reder said, “but particularly among people at the lower end of the skill spectrum, the amount that they use the skills that they have is going way down.”
Behind the scenes: Workers have long found ways to hide literacy gaps, like asking family for help, avoiding written tasks or relying on coworkers, Bergson-Shilcock said.
Now, AI may be accelerating that — creating what she calls an “invisible drag on productivity” that doesn’t show up in data but slows teams down.
In some cases, Bergson-Shilcock said low literacy among supervisors can ripple across entire workplaces, affecting performance and compliance.
The bottom line: AI may help workers keep up, but it also raises the risk that they’re producing answers they don’t fully understand.
Reder compared AI to calculators, which made math easier but did not eliminate the need to understand what problem you were solving.
“You still need to know what you’re doing,” he said.
AI is ushering in a new era of colonialism By Josephine Walker

As AI changes the way the world gathers information, some critics say that it is perpetuating stereotypes and erasing cultural nuances for Indigenous groups and people of color.
Why it matters: Most mainstream models are trained on the work of Western writers — particularly white men — and regularly mimic those values, writing styles, viewpoints and biases.
Some critics say the data grab is a new form of colonialism, where information gathering replaces Imperial-era land seizures while the AI companies — rather than a conquering nation — reap profits from marginalized groups.
Data collection from these groups is often done without their consent or any verification that the information is accurate.
What they’re saying: “Colonialism is always portrayed as something that happened in the past ... many countries got independence, and then the textbooks say ‘colonialism is over,’” Julian Posada, a Yale assistant professor who studies the relationship between human labor and data production, tells Axios.
Posada says that modern-day colonialism still exists, but people often fail to recognize it.
Context: Most large language models are made by the WEIRD — Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic societies — and pull data from social media, websites, news archives, and digitized materials that largely originate in North America and Europe.
Those training materials have resulted in LLMs inventing details based on Western assumptions about cultural traditions or values, and those errors persist despite Big Tech putting in work to train them with more diverse viewpoints and data.
Case in point: Aditya Vashistha, an assistant professor at Cornell University, tells Axios that AI models will often say all Indian food is “rich and aromatic and spicy” even though some isn’t, flattening the diversity of the Indian palate.
“You will find different regional cuisines which differ in the spices which are used, or in what moderation, like the amounts they use.”
Zoom out: Taking the data itself is a “deeply colonial act,” Nick Couldry, co-author of “Data Grab: The New Colonialism of Big Tech and How to Fight Back,” tells Axios.
“To say, ‘Well, it’s just out there. We can just take it.’ That was what colonialism was about, just taking everything.”
Instead of chasing every new AI headline, learn the fundamentals.
First, they told you AI would take everyone’s job.
Then came MCP.
Then they told you AI Agents would do everything and replace entire teams.
A few months later, the conversation changed:
“It’s not really about AI.”
“It’s about changing company processes.”
“It’s about workflow redesign.”
“It’s about organizational adoption.”
“It’s about ROI.”
And now?
The same people who confidently predicted the end of software engineering are suddenly calling those predictions a joke.
The story keeps changing.
The fear keeps getting repackaged.
The buzzwords keep getting updated.
What remains constant is this:
Most people still don’t understand the basics of how AI actually works and what it can realistically do.
Will jobs change? Absolutely.
Will some roles become less important? Yes.
Will entirely new roles emerge? Also yes.
That’s how every major technology shift has worked.
Instead of chasing every new headline, learn the fundamentals.
Understand what AI can do.
Understand what AI cannot do.
Understand where humans still create the most value.
Fear is a terrible learning strategy.
Curiosity is a much better one.
