Anthropic hands the public Mythos-class AI

The Rundown: Anthropic just released Claude Fable 5, opening its top Mythos tier to the public for the first time — with a new set of guardrails compared to the original Mythos Preview and performance that is state-of-the-art on nearly all AI benchmarks.

The details:

  • April’s initial Mythos Preview was only available to 150+ vetted partners via Project Glasswing, surfacing serious flaws across major OS and browsers.

  • Fable is a more restricted version of Mythos, with queries on topics like cybersecurity, biology, and chemistry routed to Opus 4.8 instead.

  • Fable hits new highs across major benchmarks, showing massive gains over Opus 4.8 and GPT 5.5 on coding, reasoning, knowledge work, and more.

  • Mythos 5 releases to Anthropic’s Project Glasswing partners, providing less restrictive use on cybersecurity at lower costs than Mythos Preview.

  • Fable is available in all Claude subscription tiers until June 22, then it will flip to separate usage credits priced at $10 / M input and $50 / M output tokens.

Why it matters: Every lab calls its latest release “the best model in the world”… What’s rare is the rest of the AI world actually seeming to agree. Fable/Mythos lived up to the hype on benchmarks, but the question now turns to broader cost and access, with lots of content restrictions and June 22 looming as the cutoff before the credit pain kicks in.

Perplexity data maps the agent work shift

The Rundown: Perplexity and Harvard Business School published a study on how AI agents change knowledge work, comparing the company’s Computer platform against Search to measure outputs, time saved, and task complexity between the two paths.

The details:

  • Researchers compared 10k identical queries sent to both products, with Computer working 26 minutes on average compared to Search’s 33 seconds.

  • Search is initially quicker, but leaves ‘doing’ to the user, with Perplexity estimating the same Search workflow taking 269 minutes vs. Computer’s 36.

  • Half of what users asked the agent to do involved creating something new, 2x the Search rate, and work outside a user’s field climbed nine points to 59%.

  • Users also asked Computer for harder work, creating docs, code, and visuals, more often across several fields instead of simple lookups on Search.

Why it matters: The giant speedup numbers are useful, but more interesting is what people asked for via the agentic route. Perplexity Computer users were more likely to request cognitively complex, creative outputs and pull across multiple fields, showing a subtle draw of AI agents may be users acting with more ambition, not just efficiency.

Apple’s killer AI feature is the one we ignore

Apple’s most powerful asset in AI is also the easiest to overlook and take for granted.

When Apple rebooted Apple Intelligence and Siri AI on Monday at WWDC 2026, nearly all the features announced were playing catch-up with the AI labs and the phone makers (with the one big exception being Spatial Reframing, which is quite impressive and unique).

But there are three ways that even Apple’s me-too features can provide advantages for a lot of users and bring new people into AI:

  • Usability: Apple has become Apple by making complex things simple. And AI can get incredibly complex. One of the ways Apple is removing friction in AI is by disaggregating features and integrating them into the places where we’re most likely to use them, rather than forcing us to always open a chatbot window. In other words, on the home screen, in the keyboard, in the camera app, in the Shortcuts app, etc.

  • Privacy and safety: While other AI and device makers are deeply focused on running AI in the cloud, Apple prefers to run its AI either on-device or on its Private Cloud Compute platform, ensuring that even Apple itself can’t view, access, or misuse your most sensitive data.

  • Personal Context: Apple can tailor AI to answer questions or perform actions based on information stored on your Apple devices, including email, text messages, notes, photos and documents. That can be enormously useful, but also be scary since it’s highly sensitive information. So it requires deep trust that stems from strong policies and frameworks around security and privacy.

All three of these factors work together, but it’s Personal Context that is ultimately Apple’s greatest superpower in AI.

Consider this: when OpenClaw burst onto the scene earlier this year, it very rapidly became the most useful personal AI agent that anyone had seen. And even though it was difficult to configure and risky to run, it became a cultural phenomenon in the tech industry, with over half a million people excited to use it. Why? Because OpenClaw users gave it access to a whole computer, which typically contained a treasure trove of context, including messages and documents.

OpenClaw wasn’t the first personal AI agent, and it wasn’t even necessarily the most advanced. It was just the one that operated off the most context. And as a result, it was able to do more and create more value for its users.

Apple’s Personal Context has the potential to do the same. It doesn’t need to have the most bleeding-edge features or the most powerful models, as long as it has strong enough AI capabilities and enough trust that users will be confident giving it access to more of their data and context.

Where Apple’s AI strategy runs deeper than Siri

A revamped Siri stole the spotlight at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, but it wasn’t the only headline. Deep Apple Intelligence integrations across the company’s entire product ecosystem proved just as compelling, if not more so.

Like Siri, Apple Intelligence also benefits from the latest Apple Foundation Models (with help from Gemini), making it smarter and more capable and enabling it to fuel new experiences across Photos, Safari, Passwords, Shortcuts, Image Playgrounds and more. The new features all focus on enhancing everyday tasks for users.

My favorite and the most unique feature is Spatial Reframing, which lets users recompose photos by shifting the subject’s perspective with a touch and drag, generating new content to fill the gaps (it’s better understood visually, so check out this clip). Other new photo-editing additions include Extend for expanding images to fix the framing, and an upgraded Clean Up tool with a new high-quality mode for difficult edits.

Safari also received what I thought were standout upgrades, highlighted by two Apple Intelligence-powered features. Tab grouping automatically organizes open tabs by topic, while Notify Me lets users set natural language alerts for website changes: from price drops to something as specific as a new ice cream flavor appearing on a menu.

Without explicitly saying the word “agent,” Apple also released two new features that accomplish some agentic things: extensions and shortcut automation. People can now create extensions in Safari by describing what they would want it to do. Similarly, in Shortcuts, users can now describe a Shortcut to automate tasks, with Shortcuts figuring out how to assemble the steps for the user.

  • Passwords: It can now automatically fix compromised passwords for users with just a tap, and even handle multiple at the same time.

  • Image Playground: The image generator, now powered by a new Private Cloud Compute model, produces high-quality images in a new photorealistic style, and easier editing via tap, circle, or highlight.

  • Messages: Users get one-tap suggestions based on the context of conversations.

  • Phone: Call Context surfaces relevant information, such as a reservation number.

  • Home Kit: Users can now receive a single summary of multiple notifications and read a summary of video descriptions from cameras.

Codex helps automate a Japanese farm

The Rundown: OpenAI published a profile of Hiroki Tomiyasu, a self-taught broccoli farmer in Hokkaido who uses ChatGPT and Codex to build greenhouse automation, satellite crop tracking, and custom farm software to help run his operations.

The details:

  • Tomiyasu manages roughly 100 hectares in Hokkaido, growing soybeans, green onions, pumpkins, and broccoli after learning farming on the job.

  • AI helps pull and analyze satellite imagery for monitoring, diagnose plant diseases, and create an Airtable hub for records, pesticide logs, and feeds.

  • Codex also helped build a greenhouse control system to raise and lower vents via text and set up a bot for the farm group chat to help manage operations.

  • Tomiyasu compared AI to an always-available engineer, lowering the barrier to automation for farm operators without big tech teams.

Why it matters: This profile is “you can just build things” on steroids — a self-taught farmer operating like he has an engineering department for the price of a ChatGPT sub. It’s also a great example of what the selfware era looks like: instead of waiting for an ag-tech company to fix problems, Tomiyasu just builds the needed tools himself with AI.

Argentina courts AI with ‘non-human corporations’

The Rundown: Argentina submitted legislation creating a new legal category called the ‘non-human corporation,’ a company owned and run by AI, with President Javier Milei writing an op-ed to brand the country as the world’s deregulated home for AI.

The details:

  • The bill seeks to make Argentina the easiest place for people to run a company, aligning with Milei’s deregulation effort throughout his presidency.

  • The legislation centers on ‘non-human corporations’ run by AI systems that still get liability protection and favorable corporate tax and governance benefits.

  • Historian Yuval Noah Harari pushed back with his own opinion piece, warning that AI legal personhood could result in an ‘AI state’ impossible to regulate.

Why it matters: The not-so-distant future where an AI can run a company is a strange one, and Milei’s legislation is skating to where the tech is going. His proposal is definitely a first-mover push, but it also leaves serious questions about who is held responsible (and how) when things go wrong, and no human is directly accountable.

Apple unveils Siri AI LINK

  • At WWDC 2026, Apple revealed a major Siri overhaul built on a partnership with Google Gemini, which will help power the voice assistant’s underlying model as part of Apple Intelligence, with rollout expected later this year.

  • The revamped Siri gets a stand-alone app, chatbot-style interactions with access to past conversations, file uploads, and text requests, plus the ability to pull personal info from your phone, including what’s on your screen.

  • Siri can now do things like compose emails by pulling context from apps like Notes, and draft texts for your group chats, following the 2026 pitch from rival assistants of trading personal data for better help.

OpenAI files confidentially for IPO LINK

  • OpenAI has confidentially submitted an S-1 filing with the SEC for an initial public offering, though the company said on X it has not set a timeline and may stay private longer to pursue certain plans.

  • The ChatGPT maker, last valued at over $850 billion, filed just one week after rival Anthropic disclosed its own confidential IPO paperwork at a $965 billion post-money valuation, setting up a race to Wall Street.

  • OpenAI is trying to monetize ChatGPT’s more than 1 billion monthly active users by bringing ads to the assistant, while Anthropic’s Claude has gained ground in enterprises, with business adoption hitting 34.4% in April versus OpenAI’s 32.3%.

The Rundown: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and chief scientist Jakub Pachocki published a blog titled “Built to benefit everyone”, breaking down the company’s goals as AI progress continues to accelerate — saying it’s now entering a “third phase.”

The details:

  • The post detailed three core goals: building AI that automates the research process, accelerating the economy, and giving everyone “a personal AGI”.

  • OAI said “entirely automating everything is not the future we want”, adding “AI should help people pursue their goals, not become untethered from them.”

  • OAI labeled the current stretch its “third phase,” noting that after pure-research roots and product-shipping, the “economy is now being shaped around AI.”

  • They also proposed a global coordination body that could rein in or pause frontier AI work, coming after a similar proposition from Anthropic last week.

Why it matters: This post has the same existential threads seen in last week’s Anthropic post, including the discussion around pause scenarios. It’s notable to see from both of the top AI labs in the world, which makes the next incoming model releases (potentially Mythos and GPT 5.6) feel all the more consequential.

Apple announces iOS 27 LINK

  • Apple has unveiled iOS 27, the next major iPhone update, which leans heavily on performance fixes and design refinements rather than a single headline feature.

  • Liquid Glass now includes a slider to adjust transparency, icons get extra layers of refraction for a sharper look, and a new CPU scheduler is meant to make older iPhones feel more responsive.

  • Every iPhone that runs iOS 26 can run iOS 27, going back to the iPhone 11 and second-gen iPhone SE, and Spotlight, search, and Mail have been rebuilt around a new index and ranking system.

Pentagon accuses Alibaba and BYD of supporting Chinese military LINK

  • The Pentagon has added Alibaba, Baidu, and EV maker BYD to its 1260H roster of firms it says support the Chinese military, restoring designations from a February list that was pulled minutes after posting.

  • The update also reinstates memory chipmakers ChangXin Memory Technologies and Yangtze Memory Technologies, and now labels three of China’s top AI players — Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent — as aiding the People’s Liberation Army.

  • While the list carries few immediate legal consequences, the Pentagon increasingly uses it to block companies from US military contracts and research funding, and it often serves as a red flag preceding tougher trade restrictions.

Musk explains SpaceX AI satellite design LINK

  • SpaceX founder Elon Musk shared fresh details on the AI-1 satellite, the first version of a planned 1-million-satellite orbital network built to run artificial intelligence computing, ahead of the company’s expected record IPO.

  • Musk said an AI satellite is mostly solar cells, a radiator, and some laser links, making it simpler to design than a Starlink satellite because it skips the complex communications antennas Starlink requires.

  • SpaceX also plans Gigasat, an 11-million-square-foot expansion in Bastrop, Texas, that will make large solar panels, and a future Terafab covering 100 million square feet, about ten times the size of Tesla’s Austin gigafactory.

China presents $295B AI buildout plan LINK

  • China is putting together a roughly 2 trillion yuan ($295 billion) blueprint to build a nationwide network of AI data centres over the next five years, according to Bloomberg, with the aim of sidelining American chipmakers.

  • The National Development and Reform Commission is leading the effort to link scattered computing sites into one grid by 2028, run mainly by China Mobile and China Telecom, with Huawei and other local suppliers providing at least 80 percent of the core technology.

  • Funding would come largely from sovereign debt, including ultra-long-term special government bonds and state funds, and the build sits inside a wider “Six Networks” programme covering water, power, and computing that could push spending past 5 trillion yuan.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman called it “really, really dangerous” for Anthropic to discuss Claude’s potential consciousness in its instructions and constitution docs.
